Cold Weather Causes Travel Chaos in Europe

Europe is having very cold weather. This is not normal for this time of year. Heavy snow and very low temperatures are causing big problems for travel. Many flights are cancelled. Roads are also difficult to use. Thousands of people are stuck.

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is the most affected by flight problems. More than 700 flights were cancelled there. The Dutch airline KLM said this is an "exceptional" situation. KLM is worried about the supply of de-icing fluid. This fluid is needed to keep planes safe in ice. If it runs out, more flights could be cancelled.

Other airports in Europe also have problems. In France, about 100 flights were cancelled at Charles de Gaulle Airport. Orly Airport cancelled 40 flights. French officials asked airlines to reduce flights by 40%. This was to help manage the situation. London Heathrow and Brussels airports also have delays and cancellations.

The cold weather is also dangerous for driving. In France, five people died in car accidents. The roads are very icy. Similar bad driving conditions are reported in Bosnia. Trucks and Eurostar trains are also delayed. This makes travel very slow.

Many travellers are spending the night at airports. Over a thousand passengers slept at Schiphol Airport. Tents were set up for them. Food and drinks were provided. Beds were also made available. It is not clear when the cold weather will end. Europe's ability to handle this cold is being tested.
