Cyprus Leads European Union Council

Nicosia, Cyprus – January 7, 2026 – Cyprus has started its important role leading the Council of the European Union. The capital city has become a busy place for important meetings. A special ceremony started this six-month job. Many important European and international guests were there.

European leaders like Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa attended. Presidents from Ukraine, Moldova, Iraq, and Lebanon also came. This showed Cyprus's important role for the EU's future plans. Cyprus showed it is very committed to its work in the EU. President Nikos Christodoulides said he was proud. He believes Cyprus can handle future problems.

The ceremony was elegant. It had speeches and a special art show. This show represented the EU's many goals. The event also focused on the EU's work with the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Ministers from Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE were present. Leaders from the Arab League and Gulf Cooperation Council also attended.

Many preparations were made for the day. This caused traffic problems in Nicosia. Roads were closed, and parking was not allowed in the city centre. Police provided strong security. They controlled who could enter important places. Drones were not allowed near the event.

Leading the EU Council is a big job for Cyprus. It means discussing important policies. It also means bringing together EU member countries. The meetings in Nicosia show Cyprus's good location. It can help connect Europe and its neighbours. Cyprus has many expectations for this role. Its success will be important for Cyprus's journey in the EU.
