Cyprus Police Reforms Cause Worry

There is worry about changes in the Cyprus Police. Justice Minister Costas Fitiris asked for less fighting on Monday. He said laws should solve the problems. Police unions and parliament members are also worried. They want to talk about the issues. This shows a mix of government ideas, police work, and what officers want.

The Minister believes laws should fix the reform problems. He worries that listening to unions or others will not help. Fitiris said, "I do not think this fight is worth continuing." He wants peace in the police force. This is important because police stations in Paphos and rural areas have too few staff. This makes people worry about fighting more crime.

Minister Fitiris did not give more officers to Paphos. Instead, he wants to move police around. This could help prevent crime better. This shows the government wants to use current staff well. The police are changing and improving now. They hope to work best by the end of April. The Chief of Police will decide where officers go.

However, these changes are causing disagreements. Nikos Loizides and Angelos Nikolaou want the House legal affairs committee to discuss the issue. Nikolaou is also waiting for a special police committee to meet. This shows they want more people to talk about the problems.

Fitiris is happy with police work in Paphos and Limassol. He said problems are not everywhere. The Ministry of Justice will try to get better technology. They will also fix old problems. They will work with the Chief of Police. The Minister said the police force is like a pyramid. The officers at the bottom are very important. Reforms must help these officers. The talks and planned meetings show a plan to fix these issues. The goal is a stronger police force for Cyprus.
