Cyprus: Good Weather, But Road Safety Challenges

Cyprus is a popular holiday place. It has a wonderful "ideal breeze." However, the island also faces problems with road safety and public order. A recent study said Paphos has the third-best breeze in the world. This is because of good temperature, humidity, and wind. British meteorologist Jim NR Dale helped with this study.

Cyprus is also working to attract tourists in winter. They had "Christmas Villages" from late 2025 to early 2026. This helped tourism during quiet months. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism led this project. Many villages benefited from the extra money. Visitors enjoyed Cypriot traditions. Kiosk rentals made over €4,000.

At the same time, police are dealing with road safety issues. In 2025, eleven people died because of drunk driving. Police want to take away driving licenses immediately for serious traffic crimes. This includes driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2025, police gave out 3,226 tickets for too much alcohol. They also gave 869 tickets for drug use.

There were 45 road deaths in 2025. This is more than the year before. Police are talking with the Ministry of Transport. They want to make new laws for quicker punishments.

There are other problems too. In Girne, three people were arrested for being drunk in public. They also disturbed the peace and attacked police officers. Four people were arrested for not having legal papers to stay in Cyprus. A fire also damaged cars in Girne. It might have been an electrical problem. Cyprus is a beautiful place for tourists. But it must also deal with safety issues. New laws and police work will help.
