Hungary has stopped important talks about the European Union growing bigger. This is bad for countries like Ukraine. Hungary said no to all parts of the discussion about new countries joining. This has caused a big argument between EU countries. It also shows big differences about the EU's future.
This problem happened at a meeting on December 16th. Hungary's leader, Viktor Orbán, was very against Ukraine joining. Budapest said its decision will not change. This makes it hard for Cyprus, the next leader of the EU Council.
Germany is worried about this. German officials are thinking about punishing Hungary. They might take away some of Hungary's rights in the EU. They could also stop EU money for Hungary. Germany thinks this is important. They say Hungary's actions hurt the EU's plans to grow. They also make the EU look weak to other countries.
Hungary's actions also create other problems in the EU. Hungary and Poland have their own issues. They are not sure about joining the euro. In Hungary, most people like the euro. However, the country's laws say the forint is the money. Hungary also has high debt.
Poland also has less interest in the euro. A recent survey showed only 45% of people support it. High prices and new money rules are reasons for this. The Polish Finance Minister said Poland is not trying to join the euro.
Hungary's veto power causes more issues. Other countries like Lithuania want to link EU money to following rules. Latvia and Estonia agree. They think Hungary's actions hurt the EU's ability to make decisions. Hungary is a big problem for the EU. The EU needs to find new ways to work together. This also means the euro zone might grow slower.
