Young Soldiers Face Money Problems in Cyprus

Many young soldiers in Cyprus have serious money problems. This is happening while they do their national service. They find it hard to pay for daily needs. This can make them less willing to defend their country. Reports from the army say many soldiers cannot afford food or a place to live. Some soldiers cannot even take time off because they have no money. This problem makes us ask if the current help is enough.

A group called PEMSE looked at the money problems at a military camp. They found that the money soldiers get each month is too small. It is €168. This amount is not enough for today's prices. The money is meant for small things. But now, it is used for food. Soldiers are in a difficult financial situation. PEMSE said that money problems go beyond the camp. For some, army food is their only good meal.

The government has started some programs to help. They created new committees to deal with these money issues. These programs give about €100 to around 200 soldiers. This happens during holidays like Christmas and Easter. Some soldiers can get money if they are very poor. They might also get help with travel and food. Army leaders know this is a big problem. They say the army shows the country's money problems. They agree the state must help soldiers. However, some people think these new plans are not enough.

These money worries are bad for soldiers' minds. Stress from not having money is hard. It is harder in the army. Sadly, some soldiers have died by suicide before. This shows how serious the mental health problems can be. Some soldiers might not want to finish their service. They worry about money after they leave the army. Some commanders use their own money to help soldiers. This shows that official help is not enough. The Ministry of Defence says everyone needs to work together. They say this is linked to the country's economy. Cyprus must help its soldiers. They protect the country.
