China Adds Tax to Contraceptives to Boost Births

China's government has made new tax changes. They added a 13% sales tax on contraceptives. This is to help with a falling birth rate. The country has seen its population shrink for three years. People are confused by this new plan. They do not think it will help families.

The new tax started this year. It affects items like condoms and birth control pills. However, services for childcare and marriage are still free from tax. This difference in taxes is meant to make raising a family cheaper. Many people doubt this will work. Experts think it is not clear if this will make people have more children.

China faces a big population problem. Last year, fewer than 10 million babies were born. This is much less than ten years ago. The population is getting older. The economy is also slow. These problems threaten China's future. The government tried other things before. They made birth rules easier. They also gave money to families. But these ideas did not help much. People worry about money and the high cost of raising children.

The tax on contraceptives caused many online talks. People asked why this policy was made. Some users joked about buying many contraceptives. Others saw the big difference in cost. Buying contraceptives is much cheaper than raising a child. The cost of education, healthcare, and housing is very high. This affects parents' decisions.

There are worries about bad results. Unwanted pregnancies might increase. The rate of HIV could also go up. It is not sure if this tax will really help families have more children. Young people in China have many worries. Economic problems and social pressures are big. China needs better solutions for its population. These tax changes alone may not be enough. We will see what happens in the next few months.
