New Year's Eve: Hope and Sadness Around the World

People everywhere celebrated January 1, 2026. New Year's Eve had parties and quiet moments. Many communities showed hope for the future. Some places showed strength after sad events.

Sydney, Australia, had fireworks. This was after a bad attack in Bondi. Many people were sad. However, the fireworks were a symbol of unity. The city wanted to heal together. The Premier said they would not be afraid of terrorism. The Harbour Bridge had lights. A special symbol was shown for solidarity. A moment of silence remembered the people who died. About 3,000 police officers were there for safety.

Pacific Islands like Kiribati started the new year with parties. New Zealand also had many celebrations. In Seoul, South Korea, a bell was rung. This is a tradition to wish away bad luck. People celebrated at the Great Wall in China. They held up signs saying "2026." Hong Kong did not have fireworks. This was to show respect after a building fire.

In America, Rio de Janeiro and New York City had big events. However, the United States made a change. President Trump removed the National Guard from some cities. This was a surprise. The troops were helping to stop crime. The decision was because of problems with the mission. Some soldiers will stay in Los Angeles and Chicago. Others will stay in Portland.
