Cyprus Takes EU Presidency in 2026

Cyprus will lead the European Union for six months starting in January 2026. This is the country's second time holding this important role. President Nikos Christodoulides will be in charge of important EU decisions. Cyprus will focus on defence and security matters.

The presidency is part of a team with Poland and Denmark. This helps ensure that EU policies are consistent. Cyprus will lead meetings and work on new defence laws. The country plans to host about 260 official events. Their main goals are to improve security and make the EU more competitive. They also want to promote unity and shared values.

The EU faces many global challenges. The war in Ukraine has made defence cooperation very important. This increased focus on security might affect how countries work together on defence.

A major issue for Cyprus is a long-standing disagreement with Turkey. Cyprus and Greece do not want Turkey to join certain EU defence programs. This is because of Turkey's military presence in northern Cyprus. This problem could cause difficulties as the EU tries to strengthen its defence.

President Christodoulides said it is a moment of pride and a big responsibility. He wants to help the EU move forward together. Cyprus also hopes to improve relations with Turkey.

One idea is to encourage Turkey to join a NATO program. This could be a step towards future NATO membership. This might help reduce Cyprus's objections to closer EU-Turkey cooperation. The success of Cyprus's presidency will depend on how well it manages meetings and complex politics. The government feels ready and confident.
