Cyprus's water system has a big problem. Eighteen main dams are almost empty. It is the end of the year.
December had some rain. However, it was not enough to fill the dams. The Water Development Department has a water shortage.
On December 29th, dams held only 9.2% of their water. This is 26.9 million cubic meters. This is not much more than six days before. The rain did not help much.
Only 1.418 million cubic meters entered the dams in December. This is one of the worst December amounts since 2015. Last year, over 5.71 million cubic meters came in.
Rain ran off the land and went to the sea. It did not go into the ground to fill the dams. The weather did not bring enough rain. The mountains did not get enough snow.
Low water levels are serious for drinking water and farming. The Water Development Department hopes for more rain. They need rain in the mountains and snow. If not, Cyprus will have to manage water carefully.
