Cyprus is dealing with a very sad series of road accidents that have killed several people in a short time. These tragic events happened in different areas, leaving communities in mourning. The police are now working hard to find out what caused them. The victims include a teenager, a young Ukrainian man, and an elderly woman. Together, these deaths show a serious problem with road safety on the island.
The first serious accident happened in Paphos. A motorcycle with two young people lost control late at night. The 19-year-old driver crashed into a curb and a barrier. Both the driver and his 17-year-old passenger hit their heads badly. The passenger also broke his arm. They were taken to the hospital. Doctors said their injuries were serious, but they are expected to survive.
In a much worse accident, a truck crashed on a motorway near Kakoratzia. The 22-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle. Sadly, a 17-year-old girl in the truck, Aliki Nikolaou, died at the scene. Four other people in the truck had only minor injuries. The fire service had to help them get out of the damaged vehicle. The police gave the driver a breathalyser test for alcohol, and it was positive. He was arrested after he refused to give another sample.
At the same time, a 28-year-old Ukrainian man, Artem Fomichov, died from his injuries. He was riding his motorcycle days before when a truck turned in front of him. He was thrown from his bike and later died in the hospital. Also, a 66-year-old woman from Limassol, Androulla Sirivianou, died after being hit by a car in July.
These accidents, which caused three deaths in less than a day, are making people talk urgently about road safety. The police are investigating all the cases. People are now thinking seriously about how to stop more lives from being lost.
