Cyprus Re-elected to Important International Maritime Group

In a recent election, the Republic of Cyprus was chosen again to be on the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for 2026-2027. This result shows that the country remains an important voice in world shipping. The election happened in London, and Cyprus received 136 votes. This moved the country from twelfth place to seventh place on the council, which is a big improvement.

The Cypriot government is very happy with this result. They say it shows that other countries trust them and their shipping policies. Officials stated that this stronger position will let Cyprus help make more decisions about global shipping. They also believe it confirms Cyprus's role as a major shipping centre.

This election took place at a difficult time for world shipping. The industry is dealing with problems like reducing pollution and improving security. Getting more votes than before shows that other nations recognize Cyprus's hard work and knowledge.

Cyprus has been a member of this important council since 1987. The government says this is because the country works hard, participates actively, and helps find solutions to industry problems. This long history gives Cyprus a strong voice in creating international shipping rules.

The shipping industry is very important for the economy of Cyprus. The country has one of the largest ship registries in the world. Being on the IMO Council helps Cyprus influence new rules, which can benefit its shipping businesses. As the world focuses on climate change, Cyprus's new position will help it take part in creating a better future for shipping.
