Cyprus Police Unions Oppose New Working Rules

Police in Cyprus are worried about new ideas for working hours. Two big police unions, Pasydy and the Police Association, are against these changes. They said on Tuesday that the proposals were announced without talking to them first. They think this is not fair to their agreements.

The Minister of Justice, Konstantinos Fytiris, visited police stations recently. He wanted to hear from officers about their work. He also wanted to find ways to make people safer. However, these visits have caused problems for the police.

The unions are worried about the details of the new rules. It is said that daily work times will change a lot. Also, the number of holiday days might become much smaller. This is a big change from before. Unions feel this is a step backward for officers.

A union speaker said they feel very unhappy. They believe big changes should be discussed with unions first. The unions warned that continuing without their agreement is wrong. This could also hurt the good relationship between police leaders and unions.

Minister Fytiris said that public safety is very important. He said people want to feel safe. His visits are part of a plan to have more police on the streets. This includes more patrols and checks. He wants people to trust the police more. However, this disagreement makes his plan harder. It shows the need to balance police work and officer happiness. The next few weeks will be important to see if they can agree.
