The Cyprus Meteorological Department has issued a yellow weather warning because of Storm Adel. The storm is expected to bring very heavy rain, strong thunderstorms, and much colder weather. The warning is active from Saturday night until Sunday afternoon. Officials are telling everyone to be very careful. There is a high risk of serious flooding and some hailstorms. Because of the dangerous conditions, people should avoid any travel that is not necessary.
This storm, named Adel, started in southern Italy and western Greece, where it caused a lot of damage. Now it is moving towards Cyprus. The storm will first hit the western and northern parts of the island late on Friday. The most severe weather will happen on Saturday and Sunday. During this time, rainfall could be between 35 and 55 millimetres per hour. This heavy rain can easily cause flash floods. There is also a high chance of hailstorms, especially in the north and east.
An officer from the Meteorology Department, Andreas Chrysanthous, gave advice to the public. He said, "We are asking people to stay alert and to avoid car journeys if they can. The possibility of flooding and hail is high." He explained that a yellow warning means people should be careful because the weather can change suddenly and become dangerous.
The storm will also bring strong winds and colder temperatures. Winds will become stronger, and in some areas, they could be very powerful. Temperatures will drop sharply. On Sunday, it will only be around 18 degrees Celsius during the day. At night, it will be much colder, especially in the mountains.
This unstable weather will continue until Monday, but officials expect better weather by Tuesday.
