Violence in Mozambique Causes Many People to Leave Homes

Fighting in northern Mozambique is getting worse. This means many people have to leave their homes. Militants, who are part of the Islamic State group, are causing this violence. This is a big problem for aid groups. The situation is like the attack in Palma in 2021. Many foreign workers were in danger then.

The conflict started in 2017. It has grown into a very big problem. More than 300,000 people have left their homes since July. In November, over 100,000 people fled. Now, more than 350,000 people are displaced. This is much more than last year. The International Organization for Migration says over one million people are displaced. Some people have moved many times.

The militants are now moving further south. They have reached Nampula province. Mozambican and Rwandan forces are fighting them. However, a researcher named Tomás Queface thinks these efforts might not be working well. He said the Rwandan soldiers are not patrolling as much. This may make the militants more brave. Queface called them "very audacious."

The world is busy with other problems. Wars in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan get more attention. Therefore, less help is going to Mozambique. This makes it hard for local groups to help the many displaced people.

Mozambique's government has not shown a clear plan to stop the fighting. The violence and people leaving their homes have caused many deaths. Over 600 people died in the Palma attack. This conflict continues to affect the country. The future for Cabo Delgado looks difficult.
