Energy Choices: Money and Politics Matter More Than Climate

The world's energy use is changing. Money and politics are now more important than climate goals. Renewable energy is growing. However, people still use more fossil fuels. Many new liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects are approved. Oil countries want to keep producing oil for a long time.

After a big climate meeting, countries are focusing on practical energy decisions. They think that relying only on wind and solar power might be risky. This is happening in Europe. High energy prices are a problem for Europe's climate plans. Canada also plans to invest more in energy production.

A big reason for this change is more LNG for export. By 2030, there will be much more LNG available. This is making gas prices fall. For example, European gas prices are now lower. The United States is also exporting more LNG. This helps lower prices. The European Union wants to stop buying Russian gas by 2027. They need other sources.

Oil production is also important. Groups like OPEC+ will keep producing oil for many years. Saudi Arabia has started a new gas field. It will produce more gas by 2030. The United States is also producing more oil with new technology. Companies are getting better at finding oil.

However, the energy situation is complicated. Problems in the Middle East can affect oil prices. Also, political disagreements between countries cause worry.

These changes mean that climate goals for 2035 seem too small. Reaching zero emissions by 2050 might be difficult. Some people think the dream of only renewable energy is ending. This is because of the cost. Global energy use is increasing. A few countries still control most of the world's oil.
