Cyprus has now officially started its six-month turn leading the Council of the European Union. This is an important job for the island nation. This role puts Cyprus in the center of EU decisions.
The Cypriot Presidency has five main goals. These goals aim to make the EU stronger. They also want to improve the EU's position globally. A key focus will be on becoming more independent. This includes better security and defence. They also want to be ready for new dangers. Boosting the economy is also important. Working with other countries is a priority. Protecting the EU's values for everyone is also key.
President Christodoulides has a clear vision. He wants to solve today's problems. This includes digital power and connections between regions. He also wants to reduce pollution. The presidency will focus on the rule of law. They will also support affordable housing. Protecting children online is a goal. Gender equality and fighting poverty are also important. Cyprus also wants to increase the EU's global power. They will pay attention to Ukraine and the Western Balkans.
The logo for the presidency is inspired by Lefkara lace. This design shows unity. Twenty-seven parts represent the member states. The colours are warm, like the Mediterranean sun. The blue background shows the EU's identity. The logo shows that the countries are connected.
Over the next six months, Cyprus will hold many meetings. About 260 meetings will be in Cyprus. More than 1,500 meetings will be in Brussels. Around 30,000 visitors are expected. This is a big task. The presidency's success will depend on making agreements. President Christodoulides said the EU sees problems as chances to improve.
