Electricity Company Fined After Worker Death

The Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) must pay a €40,000 fine. A court in Nicosia ordered this penalty. The fine is for serious safety problems at work. Sadly, one worker died. Another worker was badly injured. The court’s decision shows the company did not follow safety rules.

The accident happened on June 22, 2021. Workers were doing difficult electrical work. A short circuit caused the problem. Two EAC workers were burned. An investigation found many rule breaks. These breaks helped cause the death. The court said EAC's safety plans were weak.

EAC did not check for risks before a test. This important step helps find and fix dangers. The company also did not have good safety measures. Workers did not get enough special training. They were not ready for the dangerous job.

The court also found problems with equipment. A fire extinguisher was not checked. This showed a lack of care for safety rules. The company broke many rules. These included safety at work, equipment standards, and fire safety.

This sad event caused great pain. One family lost a loved one. Another worker is severely hurt. The court's decision is a strong warning. Safety rules are very important. They help prevent deaths and injuries. The €40,000 fine is big. It also means EAC must change its safety culture.

The Department of Labour Inspection worked hard on this case. They want all companies to be safe. This court ruling is important for all businesses in Cyprus. It shows that good safety is essential. Companies must check risks, train workers, and keep equipment working. The accident in 2021 should lead to positive changes. Protecting workers is very important.
