Cyprus has seen big changes in migration. Fewer people are coming to the island now. At the same time, more people are returning to their home countries. This has happened over the last three years, from 2022 to 2025. This change might mean new ways to manage borders. Cooperation with the European Union has helped a lot.
The police in Cyprus worked with Frontex, an EU agency. They helped many people return home. In 2022, about 7,500 people returned. This number grew to over 9,600 in 2023. Last year, it was over 10,000. This year, they expect over 11,500 people to return. This is a 53% increase.
Fewer irregular migrants are arriving. In 2022, there were over 17,000 arrivals. This number dropped to about 11,000 in 2023. Last year, only 6,100 arrived. This year, they think about 2,400 will arrive. This is an 86% drop. Border security is stronger now.
Changes in other countries are also important. For example, the situation in Syria has become more stable. This means fewer people want to leave. Lebanon is also more stable. Therefore, fewer people are travelling to Cyprus.
Frontex operations have been very useful. This year, 150 people returned with Frontex help. This shows how important EU cooperation is. These operations help people return voluntarily or if they must.
However, Cyprus still has migration challenges. A report said Cyprus had many irregular arrivals in 2023 and 2024. But the report also said Cyprus gives protection to many people. The migration situation in Cyprus is complex. It has successes but also needs continued work.
