EU Supports Cyprus Peace Talks

The European Union wants to help solve the long problem in Cyprus. It will support efforts to make the island one country again. The EU will not lead the talks. However, it wants a united Cyprus to follow all EU laws. This is important for peace in the region. It also helps spread EU values.

Johannes Hahn is the EU's special representative for Cyprus. He said the Cyprus issue is very important for the EU. "The situation in Cyprus is very important for the whole European Union," Hahn said. He also said it is good for stability and security in the East Mediterranean. Leaders in Cyprus are ready to start talks again. The EU thinks this is a good sign.

The EU is giving money to help. It gives about €34.4 million each year to Turkish Cypriots. This helps make their economy stronger. It also helps them follow EU laws. The EU is helping with things like trade across the dividing line. This helps people in both parts of the island work together.

The EU is planning for a united Cyprus. Its budget for 2028-2034 has money for this. The EU believes a united Cyprus is possible. It wants a federation with two zones and two communities. This should have political equality. Many people think a united Cyprus will be good for the economy.
