New Flood Defences Work Well in Limassol

New defences have been built to stop floods in the Limassol mountains. These were made after big wildfires in July. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panayiotou, visited the new gabion walls. These walls were finished in November. They have already stopped some rain from causing problems. This helps prevent erosion and floods after the fires.

The big wildfire lasted for three days. It burned many trees and plants. The ground became weak. It could easily be washed away by heavy rain. This could cause flash floods. The Ministry of Agriculture worked with other departments. They started a big project to make 21 places stronger. This covered about 120 kilometres. Five companies and 50 workers helped. The project cost about €500,000. The goal was to stop flash floods.

Minister Panayiotou was happy with the gabion walls. She said the ministry will make sure they work for a long time. The minister also said the project was finished on time. The walls are ready for bad weather. This plan will help with problems after the wildfire. It will also help with heavy rain.

The visit was also about water for Cyprus. Andreas Gregoriou, from the Agriculture Ministry, was there too. They talked about how to get more water. They will improve old water sources. They will also build more desalination plants. They will spend €200 million on water pipes. The ministry is also telling people to save water. This is important for managing water use.

The new flood defences give hope to people in Limassol. The ministry will build more if needed. This shows they are ready for environmental problems. The situation in Souni-Zanakia reminds us of nature and people working together. Good buildings and public help are important. This helps protect people and the environment. We must always be careful and plan for the future.
