Cyprus and Greece have a new idea for the European Council. They want to stop Turkey from getting money for Ukraine's defence. Presidents Nikos Christodoulides and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis are leading this. They want money for Ukraine's security to go to the European Defence Industry. Or it should come from countries that are not a threat to EU members.
The European Council will meet on Thursday. They will talk about money for Ukraine. However, Greece and Cyprus want to change the plan. They want to protect the money. They do not want it to go to countries that are enemies or that take EU land. President Christodoulides said that EU money for Ukraine's defence should not go to countries that occupy EU land or threaten EU members. This is about Turkey's position and its arguments with EU countries.
Greece also wants Ukraine to buy weapons that match what EU countries need. This means each EU country can choose what defence it needs. It is not one plan for everyone.
Cyprus also had good news on other topics. President Christodoulides was happy about EU enlargement. He liked that Johannes Hahn was chosen. He also liked that the EU is talking more. The European Council will talk about solving the Cyprus problem. They will also mention the UN rules for Varosha. This is good for peace talks.
President Christodoulides also liked a letter about migration. The letter said Cyprus is doing well to join Schengen. Cyprus is good at managing migrants. Cyprus has sent back more people. It has also stopped more people from coming in. Other countries can learn from Cyprus.
Cyprus and Greece want to make sure EU money helps Ukraine. They do not want it to help countries that cause problems. If Turkey does not get this money, it could change Turkey's power. It could also help the European Defence Industry. It might also help solve the Cyprus conflict.
