The parliament in Cyprus has officially approved the country's money plan for 2026. The budget is very large, at €13.7 billion. Only a small amount, €10.2 million, was removed from the plan. Many people think these money cuts are very small. This is because most of the money stays the same.
There was a lot of discussion and many ideas for changes in the parliament. Most people wanted to keep the money plan as it was. Out of 91 suggested changes, only 31 were accepted. This shows that many political groups agreed with the government's money ideas for next year.
The small cuts of €10.2 million came from reducing costs by 5% in government offices. Money for projects that were not happening was also removed. Supporters say this is just a small change to the budget.
An important vote was about money for ADMIE. This company helps connect electricity between Cyprus and Greece. A plan to stop this money for a short time did not pass. It was very close. 27 people voted for it, and 28 voted against it.
Ten specific money amounts were stopped for now. However, these stops might not last long. Many of these amounts are expected to be available again in early 2026. This will happen after the next elections and when new members of parliament start working.
To help watch government spending, all ministries must now send reports twice a year. These reports will tell Parliament about projects and plans. This will make sure public money is used well. This new rule is for big projects like building roads and improving areas.
