Cypriot Farmers Protest EU Plans

Cypriot farmers recently gathered near the Presidential Palace in Nicosia. They were unhappy about proposed changes to the EU's farming policy. They also disagreed with a new trade deal with Mercosur. This protest is part of a larger movement across Europe. Farmers worry about the future of their jobs.

Farmers from several big groups marched to the president's home. They wanted to give letters to the European Commission and Parliament. These letters explained their problems. They asked for government help quickly.

They want more money from the state. They also need real solutions for current farming issues. Farmers asked President Nikos Christodoulides to speak against the CAP changes. This is important for the future of farming and food in Cyprus.

The protest shows a big difference between farmers and EU leaders. Farmers feel EU rules put too much pressure on them. They think lower CAP budgets and the Mercosur deal are dangerous. These could hurt many farmers.

The Ministry of Agriculture knows farmers are unhappy. A government official said EU ministers also dislike the current proposals. Cyprus will try to improve these plans during its turn leading the EU Council. This is a good chance for Cyprus to help farmers.

Farm union leaders said state support is very important. They also need expert advice. One leader warned that if the President does not oppose the CAP changes, "Cyprus is finished." This shows they think the situation is very serious.

These protests are happening all over Europe. Farmers in Brussels are also demonstrating. This shows farmers are working together. They want to change policies for European farming. The decisions made now will affect farming after 2027.
