Many Ghanaian PhD students in the UK have a serious problem. Their government has not paid their school fees and living money. Because of this, some students might be sent back to Ghana. This is a big problem for their studies.
Over 100 Ghanaian students are in danger of losing their place at university. Their government promised to pay for their studies. However, the new government owes about £32 million to UK universities. Therefore, no new scholarships are being given. Also, current students are not getting their money. Some students have been expelled from universities like UCL. The UK Home Office has started deporting some students.
These students are having a very hard time. Many might lose their homes. Some are borrowing money or using food banks to live. Prince Komla Bansah, who speaks for the students, said their future is not sure. He said it is very hard to work and study for a PhD. Many students have large debts. The Ghanaian scholarship office is looking into the problem. They will visit the UK in April.
Meanwhile, Canada is changing its immigration rules. They want fewer temporary residents. In late 2023, Canada's population went down a little. This is because fewer temporary residents are allowed. The Canadian Finance Minister said Canada had too many people. Canada wants to cut the number of international student permits. They plan to have fewer new students in the coming years. However, Canada still wants to welcome many permanent residents.
