Greek Cypriots Freed in North, One Remains for Court

A court in Trikomo has dropped charges against one of two Greek Cypriots. This man can now go back to the Republic of Cyprus. However, the other person stays in the north. Her court case is still happening. A final decision is expected soon.

The Trikomo court made this important decision this week. The charges against the man were about breaking privacy rules. His release is good news for him. He was one of five Greek Cypriots arrested in July. Three others were released on bail in November. They have returned home to the south.

The woman still accused has admitted the charges. Her case will continue, and a judgment is expected on December 22nd. The man is free, but he must wait in the north. He will stay until his friend's legal case is finished.

Earlier, some charges were removed. These included "trespassing" and "causing public nuisance." This helped release all five people from those specific accusations. Another charge about a "military prohibited zone" led to an acquittal.

The arrests in July involved privacy violations, trespassing, and disturbing the peace. The prosecutor asked the court to stop the case against the man. The judge then ordered his release. The woman's lawyer explained some reasons for her actions. She admitted guilt, which changed her case.

This court decision is important. The freed man no longer has to stay in detention. However, he must wait for the woman's case. The ruling on December 22nd will finish their situation. This case shows the difficulties in relations between communities. It also shows the complex legal issues on the divided island.
