Cyprus has new information about jobs in its public sector. The numbers show a rise over the past year. However, there was a big drop in the last three months. This data is from the third quarter of 2025. The total number of public sector workers grew by 1.8% compared to last year. But, it fell by 3.7% in the most recent quarter.
In the third quarter of 2025, 74,431 people worked in the public sector. Most of these workers, 69,346, were in the General Government. This includes central government, non-profit groups, and local councils. Central government alone had 52,879 employees. Government companies also hired 5,085 people.
Looking at the whole year, the public sector added 1,294 jobs. Central government added 643 jobs. Local councils hired 550 more people, which is a 10% increase. Some local government bodies grew by over 40%. Government companies also hired 101 more workers.
However, the last three months showed a different story. The public sector lost 2,883 jobs. This is a 3.7% decrease. Central government jobs fell by 3,085. The Statistical Service said this was mainly because of fewer temporary teachers. Local councils, however, continued to grow. They added 156 jobs.
The numbers show two trends. The public sector grew over the year. But it decreased a lot in the last quarter. This might be because of school holidays or changes to temporary jobs. These numbers are complex for managing public sector staff.
