Chile Elects New Conservative President

Chile has a new president, José Antonio Kast. He is a former congressman with conservative ideas. This happened after a special election to decide who would win. The result shows a big change in the country's politics. Some people remember Chile's past with a strong leader.

Kast's campaign spoke to voters worried about crime. They were also concerned about people coming into the country. He won by a lot against his opponent, Jeannette Jara. Jara is from the left side of politics.

Kast is the first very right-wing leader since 1990. That was when Augusto Pinochet's time as leader ended. Kast wants to bring back order and stop violence. He also wants to control immigration better. He said he would send back immigrants without papers.

His ideas about security and immigration are strong. He is also against abortion and same-sex marriage. Human rights groups are worried about his presidency.

Chile has had some problems with its economy and society. The election rules changed to make voting required again. This might have helped Kast. More conservative voters may have gone to vote.

In his speech, Kast said Chile won. He said it was a win for "hope of living without fear." He promised to be very strong against crime. He wants to stop people getting away with bad actions.

For many Chileans, Kast's election is worrying. Some people remember the Pinochet time. They are still looking for justice for past problems. This election has opened old divisions in the country.

Kast's presidency will likely change how Chile handles security. It will also change how it deals with immigration. This could mean a new time for Chile. It may focus more on strong government control.
