Art Show Cancelled After Religious Controversy

An art exhibition in Paphos has been cancelled. It was meant to show the work of local artist Giorgos Gavriel. However, there was a lot of disagreement about religious pictures. The Blue Iris gallery decided to close on Sunday. This happened after the owner received threats. Many people were also unhappy.

The artworks showed new ideas about Christ and the Virgin Mary. Some people thought these pictures were very offensive. A political party candidate first spoke out on social media. This caused more anger. Then, three young people took some artworks from the gallery. Later, the threats to the gallery owner became very serious. The artist said the show had to close to keep everyone safe.

Some politicians strongly criticised the exhibition. A Member of Parliament said the gallery showed things that "desecrated Christ." He called it "blasphemy, not art." Another politician said she was "revulsed" by the works. She stated that freedom of expression is not an excuse for rudeness.

The artist, Giorgos Gavriel, disagrees with the criticism. He thinks a doctored picture of his work was shared. This made the controversy bigger. He said artists are now showing work with police nearby. He also mentioned artworks being taken away by force. Police knew about the situation. They were at the gallery during the opening and the cancellation.

This event has affected the art scene in Paphos. It shows a conflict. There is the freedom to create art. There are also strong religious feelings. The cancellation and threats show it is hard for artists and galleries. This situation will lead to more talks about free speech. It also raises questions about art that challenges beliefs. The future of artistic freedom in Cyprus is now a big question.
