US Ends Protection for Ethiopians

The United States has ended a special program for Ethiopians. This program gave them temporary legal residency. It also allowed them to work in the US. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the decision. Many migrants will lose their right to work. They could also be sent back to their country. This shows the government's focus on immigration rules.

The Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program started in 1991. It protects people from deportation. Their home countries must have big problems. These problems can be war or natural disasters. People with TPS can live and work in the US. This lasts until their country is safe. Secretary Noem decided Ethiopia is now safe enough. So, the protection ends.

This is not the first time this has happened. The government has ended TPS for other countries. Haiti, Myanmar, and Syria have also lost this status. These changes have big effects. Some groups are fighting these decisions in court. The Supreme Court looked at a case for Venezuelans. This shows the legal fights.

Secretary Noem said, "We reviewed the situation in Ethiopia." She added, "We decided it does not meet the conditions for TPS." This announcement came with other news. DHS also stopped some family cases for Cubans and Haitians. This suggests a stricter immigration policy.

Ethiopian TPS holders face big changes. They must find new ways to stay legally. Or they might have to go back to Ethiopia. The exact number of affected people is not known. However, many people had this protection. For example, 600,000 Venezuelans and 521,000 Haitians.

Some people think this is part of a political plan. President Trump wants stricter immigration. Ending TPS helps him deport more people. This is a change in how the US offers help. It favors immigration rules over safety. The future for Ethiopians and others is unclear.
