Rebels Take Important City in Congo

Rebel fighters have captured Uvira, a key port city in eastern Congo. This is bad news for peace talks. A peace agreement was recently signed. The United States helped make this agreement. Leaders from Congo and Rwanda agreed to it.

Uvira is an important place. It is on Lake Tanganyika. It is a busy place for trade. It is also near Burundi's capital city. This means the fighting is now close to another country. Congo officials say many civilians have died.

This event is a big problem. Many thought a peace deal was coming. The presidents of Congo and Rwanda met in Washington. They wanted to stop the fighting in eastern Congo. They have many resources there.

A main part of the deal was Rwanda stopping its help to rebel groups. The M23 rebels are one of these groups. The M23 did not sign the peace deal. They have started fighting more.

The United States is very unhappy. A US Ambassador said Rwanda is making the region more unstable. This is what many experts have said. They believe Rwanda helps the M23 rebels. Rwanda denies these claims.

Some people think the rebels attacked Uvira to get a better position. A professor said the attack ignores the peace talks. The M23 rebels say they have taken control of the city. This means they think having more land helps them. This could involve other countries. The peace deal is broken. The US will take action against those who stop peace. Uvira's capture makes the future in eastern Congo unclear.
