Cyprus Prepares for Flu Increase Over Holidays

Health officials in Cyprus are getting ready for more flu cases. This is expected to happen during the Christmas holidays. Flu activity is rising on the island. This is also happening in other parts of Europe. Doctors say getting a flu shot is the best way to stay safe.

The health situation in Cyprus has changed lately. Data shows flu is now the most common virus. About one in five people with symptoms have the flu. This is similar to what is happening in countries like the United Kingdom. Hospitals and clinics are watching the number of patients closely.

Professor Constantinos Tsioutis is an expert on infections. He said Cyprus has not seen the highest number of flu cases yet. This is similar to what happened last year after the holidays. He also said it is still a good time to get vaccinated.

Other viruses are also around. RSV is a risk for babies and older people. However, it is not as common as before. A vaccine for RSV is recommended for older adults and pregnant women. A special medicine is available for young children at risk. COVID-19 cases are low and not a big problem for hospitals.

Holiday gatherings and cold weather will make it harder for Cyprus's health services. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) sees more flu across Europe. This could strain medical resources. Doctors are also seeing more stomach bugs with the cold weather.

Health officials say getting vaccinated quickly is important. Public awareness is also needed. This will help protect people and hospitals. As people prepare for holidays, hospitals are also preparing. The next few weeks will show how strong the health system is.
