Larnaca Named European Capital of Culture 2030

The city of Larnaca will be the European Capital of Culture in 2030. This is a very important award. It is expected to help the city's culture and economy grow. European Commissioner Glenn Micallef announced the decision. Larnaca won against Limassol in a competition. Larnaca will share the title with cities in Belgium and Montenegro.

The European Capital of Culture programme started in 1985. It shows the different cultures in Europe. It also helps people feel connected to Europe. Cities must have a good culture plan. This plan needs to involve the community. It also needs to think about the future. Successful cities often see big changes. Tourism usually increases by about 40 percent.

Larnaca's plan is based on "anthropia." This word means human values. It is about kindness and caring for others. Commissioner Micallef said this is a good message for Europe. The European Commission may give Larnaca up to €1.5 million. This money will help with the preparations.

Limassol was sad to lose. However, their leaders were positive. The mayor said it is a success for all of Cyprus. People who worked on Limassol's plan said it helped their culture. It also created new partnerships.

This award is a big chance for Larnaca. It is the second city in Cyprus to get this honour. Paphos was the first in 2017. Larnaca must now make its plan happen. The award should increase tourism and creativity. It also aims to include everyone in culture. This will help the city for many years. The journey to 2030 has begun.
