Cyprus Floods Cause Damage and Criticism

Heavy rain has caused big problems in Cyprus. There has been widespread flooding and damage to buildings and roads. People are criticizing the authorities in the northern part of the island. The rain started on Thursday. It made roads dangerous and many were underwater. Many people have lost property and their farms are damaged. Officials on both sides of the island are checking the damage. People are worried about losing water and the lack of preparation.

The transportation system was badly affected. On Thursday afternoon, drivers could not see well. There was a lot of water on the roads. This happened on the Limassol motorway and near the Troodos mountains. Police in the Republic of Cyprus told drivers to be very careful. In the north, towns like Dikomo and Larnaca of Lapithos had water from the mountains. This damaged homes and cars. Some roads also broke.

After the floods, people saw more problems. Teams in the north are checking the damage to water and forest areas. There is disagreement about how to manage water. Erkut Uluciam, who works with farms, said there was a big failure in preparation. He said, "The rains we expected for a long time have arrived." He added, "Because no preparations were made, the water went into the sea." He explained that the Ovgos dam lost a lot of water. This happened because it was not cleaned in dry years.

Many people in the flooded towns are scared. They stayed in their homes for days. They are angry with the government. They think the authorities did not prepare well. The leaders of Dikomo and Kyrenia are visiting the damaged areas. The "agriculture minister" Huseyin Cavus is also there.

More rain is expected on Sunday and Monday. This could cause more flooding. The event shows that the island's infrastructure needs improvement. Water management is also a problem, especially in the north. The cleanup is continuing. This event reminds everyone to manage the environment better. It turned much-needed rain into destruction.
