Leaders Meet to Discuss Cyprus Future

Leaders from the divided island of Cyprus will meet this Thursday. This important meeting is helped by the United Nations. Tufan Erhürman will represent the Turkish Cypriot side. Nikos Christodoulides, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, will also be there. The UN's special envoy will also attend. This meeting follows a visit to a lab for missing persons. It aims to restart talks about the Cyprus issue.

Talks have happened for many years. However, these talks have not brought much progress. The European Union is also involved. President Christodoulides will speak with the EU's representative first. The EU's role is to help move the talks forward. This is because the process has often seen distrust between sides.

The leaders will try to create a good environment for new talks. The Greek Cypriot side says it has good intentions. However, Erhürman has warned people not to expect too much. He said on social media that high hopes are not good now. This shows the big problems in agreeing on power, security, and property. These issues have stopped a solution.

Mayors are also talking. Mehmet Harmancı met with Johannes Hahn. They talked about working together and building trust. Harmancı asked the EU to help his community more. He thinks this will help future discussions.

The results of the leaders' meeting will be seen soon. President Christodoulides will meet with Greek Cypriot party leaders on Friday. They will discuss what happened. People will watch for any new steps. A big success may be far away. However, the leaders talking again is a good sign. The UN and EU are helping. The island's future depends on real compromise.
