A fragile peace between Thailand and Cambodia has ended. The two countries are now fighting again. This happened less than two months after a peace agreement. The fighting has caused many deaths. Over half a million people have also left their homes. This shows that the problem of land between the countries is very difficult.
The fighting started in November. Thailand stopped peace talks. This was after Cambodia was accused of using a landmine. A Thai soldier was hurt. Cambodia denied this. This accusation ended a temporary peace. A ceasefire was agreed in July after much help from other countries. Now, both countries say the other broke the peace.
The fighting is getting worse. It has spread to new areas. Thailand's navy is fighting Cambodian soldiers. Cambodia says it is defending its land. Cambodia's Senate President said, "Cambodia needs peace but Cambodia must fight back to protect our land."
Sadly, many people have died. Three Thai soldiers and seven Cambodian civilians are dead. Twenty more Cambodian civilians were hurt. Many people have left their homes. This is a big problem. It is causing much worry in the area.
There are no peace talks happening. Thailand's Prime Minister said there will be no talks. He said Cambodia must do what Thailand asks. A Thai government speaker agreed. He said Cambodia has not asked for talks.
The United States helped with the last peace agreement. The US President wanted to call them. He wanted to stop the fighting. However, it is unlikely that talks will happen soon. Both sides have strong opinions. The fighting is still happening.
The future looks bad. The fighting is spreading. The ceasefire did not work. This shows the land problem is very old. The fighting continues. More people are leaving their homes. A lasting solution is needed. But it is hard to find. The stability of Southeast Asia depends on both countries. They need to stop fighting and talk. But trust is low.
