Brazil Congress Chaos Over Prison Sentence Law

Brazil's National Congress had a very busy week. A new law proposal caused big arguments and even fights. The proposal suggests making prison sentences shorter for crimes against democracy. Many people think this law is to help former President Jair Bolsonaro. Because of this, there were many protests. One lawmaker was even taken out of the room. This shows how divided Brazil's politics are. Bolsonaro's oldest son is now seen as the main political leader for his family.

The difficult situation in Congress happened because of a draft law. This law would change the rules for elected officials. It would make penalties for some crimes much smaller. These crimes include actions against democracy. Opposition lawmakers say these changes could cut Bolsonaro's 27-year sentence to about two years. The law could also help many supporters who attacked government buildings in 2023 to be released.

Bolsonaro, a popular politician, was found guilty last September. He was accused of trying to end democracy after losing the 2022 election. He started his sentence in November. His lawyers have asked for him to be under house arrest. They say he has health problems. These are from an old surgery and an injury in 2018.

During the chaos, a congressman named Glauber Braga sat in the Speaker's chair. He did this to show he disagreed. This showed that Bolsonaro's political movement is still strong. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the former president's son, said he will run for president in 2026. He said, "This candidacy is irreversible. We will not turn back." Braga said his protest was needed because of a "coup offensive" in Congress.

These events are important. They show that some lawmakers want to help Bolsonaro and his friends. Flavio Bolsonaro running for president means his father's ideas will be important in politics. This will make the 2026 election very difficult. The chaos in Congress shows a democracy with big problems. The rules for punishing attacks on the state are now a big fight.
