A big and well-organised project is changing the main roads in Nicosia right now. The authorities in Cyprus are working on an important upgrade to the city's infrastructure. This large project includes putting down new road surfaces, doing repairs, and adding new road reflectors. The Nicosia municipality and the Public Works Department are in charge of the work.
Important roads like Kennedy Avenue, Kyrenia Avenue, and Limassol Avenue are affected. To cause less trouble for people who live and drive in the city, much of the work happens at night. There are also many changes to the normal traffic routes.
The project has a lot of money behind it. The work in Nicosia is part of a €200 million plan paid for by the European Investment Bank. The government is also spending over €790 million on national road works.
The planning is very careful. For example, there will be important night repairs on the Nicosia-Limassol highway near Kotsiatis and Dali from November 25 to December 4. These works will happen each night from 9:00 PM to 5:30 AM.
Officials know the building work is disruptive, but they say it is a necessary investment. A spokesperson explained that the work is partly to prepare for Cyprus’s upcoming EU Council presidency, but many of the improvements were already planned. The city has asked everyone for their cooperation, saying the long-term benefits will be worth the current problems.
Similar road works are also happening in the northern part of the city. This shows that the whole of Nicosia is working to improve its roads, even though it is divided.
Authorities are telling drivers to follow the detour signs. With more works planned for December, the city will look different for some time. These upgrades are a big effort to make the city look better and work better for the future.
