Man Sentenced for Animal Abuse and Kangaroo Slaughter

A court in Cyprus has given a 37-year-old man a 14-month prison sentence. He was found guilty of serious animal abuse. He also illegally killed a kangaroo. This shows that Cyprus is serious about stopping wildlife crime. The court announced its decision after a quick investigation. Police found the dead kangaroo in a parking lot in Dherynia. The man was living in Cyprus illegally. This was a reason for his immediate jail sentence.

Police received a secret tip and went to the apartment complex. They found the kangaroo's body. They also found tools used to cut up the animal. A second person ran away and is still missing. The man caught at the scene said he bought the kangaroo from a smuggler. This happened in Paralimni. The veterinary services confirmed it was a kangaroo.

The police also found out the man had no legal papers. His request for asylum was refused in 2022. He stayed in Cyprus without permission. The court said this, along with the animal abuse, was very serious. Therefore, he received a prison sentence.

Police said this sentence is important. A police spokesperson said it sends a strong message. They said animal abuse is treated very seriously. The law will be strictly followed. Police also said no crime against animals is small. All crimes will be punished.

This case highlights the illegal trade of animals in Cyprus. It suggests that kangaroos are not just a rare sight. Police are still investigating. They want to find the people who smuggle these exotic animals. They are asking the public to report anything suspicious. This includes animal welfare issues or illegal animal trade.

This court decision shows that animal cruelty is now punished more severely. The man faced charges for illegal residence and animal abuse. This led to a longer sentence. Officials hope this will stop others from committing similar crimes. This case reminds everyone about the importance of treating animals humanely. It is especially important for animals in the illegal pet trade.
