Heavy rain caused a big problem in north Cyprus. A state of emergency was declared. One person has died. Many places are flooded. This happened because of a weather system called BYRON. The rain started Monday night. It continued all day Tuesday.
The water systems could not handle the rain. Rivers overflowed their banks. Emergency teams worked all night to move people to safety. Streets became like fast rivers. Cars were washed away. People were trapped in their homes.
A 57-year-old man named Ercin Fevzi was found dead in his car. This happened near Alagadi beach. Rescue teams saved people from flooded houses. They also saved animals from a flooded shelter. Hotel owners are giving free rooms to people who lost their homes.
New buildings may have made the flooding worse. They were built on old rivers. This is suspected in areas like Kioneli. The Kioneli and Kanli reservoirs overflowed. This sent a lot of water downstream. The Mayor of Nicosia, Mehmet Harmancı, called it a "dangerous situation."
Important roads are now closed. The road between Kyrenia and Nicosia is blocked. Another road is blocked by a landslide. The main hospital, Dr Burhan Nalbantoglu, was in danger. Water came close to the building. They are planning to move patients if needed. Schools are closed on Wednesday.
The Mayor of Kyrenia, Murat Şenkul, said, "We are sleepless and tired." He called it a big natural disaster. Experts worry that floodwaters could reach other areas. This could affect the Famagusta region.
The storm has stopped. Now, people must clean up. They are checking buildings for damage. They are also mourning their losses. They must also think about future floods. This event shows the need for better city planning.
