Nigerian officials have freed 100 schoolchildren. These children were taken from a school last month. They arrived in Abuja, the capital, on Sunday. The children are now getting medical checks. This is good news because many schools in Nigeria have been targeted.
The kidnapping happened on November 21. Armed people attacked St Mary's boarding school. Many students and staff were taken to a remote area. About 50 people escaped during the attack. However, 265 people were still missing. Now, 100 children are safe. But sadly, about 165 people are still held captive. These include 153 students and 12 teachers.
This is not the first time this has happened. Kidnappings have been a problem for years. Armed groups, called "bandits," often demand money. They take children because they are vulnerable. The kidnapped students from St Mary's are between 10 and 18 years old.
The children who were freed are getting help. They will be given to the Niger state government soon. They are receiving medical care and talking to counselors. This helps them recover from their experience. Families are waiting anxiously for their children. They are happy that some children are safe. However, they are still worried about those who are still missing.
