A Distant Handshake, A Close War: Congo Fighting Defies US-Brokered Peace Pact

A peace agreement between Congo and Rwanda was signed. It was meant to bring peace to the region. However, fighting quickly started again. This happened in eastern Congo. Hundreds of people had to leave their homes. They escaped to Rwanda for safety.

The meeting was to sign a peace deal. It aimed to end long-time violence. Ministers from both countries signed the paper. Former President Trump was optimistic. But some people noticed a lack of friendship between the leaders. This was seen as a sign the agreement might not work well.

Even as the meeting ended, fighting began. A town near the border became a battle area. The Congo army fought with M23 rebels. Soldiers from Burundi also helped the Congo army. This fighting was very strong. It shows the problem is growing. Burundi's involvement could make the situation worse. A source from Burundi said, "The fighting is getting worse. There is a big risk."

Many people are now in danger. They are caught in the fighting. This shows the difference between peace talks and real life. Some think the M23 rebels started fighting to show their strength. They might want to influence the talks. The quick return of violence shows that outside help might not fix the problem.
