Cypriots Lose 100 Hours Annually in Gridlock as Car Dependency Hits Critical Level

Cyprus has a big traffic problem. People waste about 100 hours each year in traffic jams. This information comes from a company called TomTom. A transport analyst, Loukas Demetriou, explained the research. The study shows that most people in Cyprus use their own cars. This is not good for the country. Experts say this is not a good way to travel.

The research shows two main problems. One is the roads and the other is how people travel. Almost everyone on the island uses a private car for trips. This is very different from other European cities. For example, in London, many people use public transport. But in Cyprus, only a small number of people use buses or trains. This means there are not enough good alternatives to driving.

Because of this, daily commutes are very slow. It takes about 26 minutes to travel just 10 kilometers. The roads are too full. This makes life difficult for people. It also costs the country money. People lose time from work and spend more on petrol.

Loukas Demetriou says people need to change how they travel. However, he also says there are not enough public transport options. This is a difficult situation. Not many people use public transport because it is not good. Because the transport is not good, there is not much investment. This means the problem will continue.

The report shows that better public transport is needed. Without it, traffic jams will not get better. The government needs to make a plan. They must invest in public transport. They also need to encourage people to use it. This will help reduce traffic and pollution.
