Prices are going up in Cyprus. This is causing problems for gas stations and shops. The cost of living is increasing. This is because of global problems and unstable energy prices. People have less money to spend. This also leads to more shopping between the two parts of Cyprus.
Higher oil prices from other countries are affecting gas prices and food prices. Fuel prices are rising. Some experts think these prices are higher than they should be. This makes people worry about companies making too much profit. It also makes it harder for families to pay their bills.
Electricity costs are also expected to rise. The head of the Electricity Authority said bills might go up by 5% by May. If oil prices stay high, bills could increase by 15% or more by August. This will make it even harder for people to manage their money.
Shops are also seeing higher prices. Prices for milk, frozen foods, chocolates, and biscuits have gone up. Some dairy products are 15% to 28% more expensive. This is because of problems in the Middle East.
Meat prices have increased a lot. The price of meat is up by 33%. Beef prices have risen by 25% in one year. Lamb and goat meat prices have also increased. These higher prices are making goods more expensive in different parts of Cyprus. This is changing where people choose to shop.
An official from the Consumer Protection Service saw big price differences. Beef costs about €27 per kilo in the north. In the south, it costs €14.95 per kilo. This is an 80% difference. Because of this, Turkish Cypriots are shopping more in the south for cheaper prices, especially for meat.
