Muslim Community Gathers for Iftar, Shows Resilience

In Lakemba, Sydney, a large Muslim community recently held an Iftar meal. This event marked the end of fasting during Ramadan. The gathering was held outside the Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb Mosque. It was a spiritual event and also showed strength and a desire for unity. The community faces growing Islamophobia in Australia. This has caused worry. Leaders added extra security. This included private guards and police. This was a response to more hate threats.

More security was needed because of world events. The Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023 caused problems. Islamophobic and antisemitic incidents increased across Australia. Reports show Islamophobia rose by 636%. Antisemitic incidents also grew a lot. A violent event at Bondi Beach in December made things worse. This act was linked to Islamic State ideology. After this, Islamophobia increased by another 201%.

Gamel Kheir, from the Lebanese Muslim Association, said times are difficult. He stated, "We are going through very challenging times." He added, "If ever there was a need for communities to come together, this year is more important than ever." The Islamophobia Register Australia was at the event. They track these problems. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry also spoke about rising antisemitism.

The Iftar meal was well organized. There were long tables with food. Police surveillance trailers were visible. This showed the security concerns. Community leaders are working to build unity. Therefore, the event was a symbol of strength. It showed defiance against hate.
