Cyprus Leases Black Hawk Helicopters for Wildfire Fight

Cyprus has signed a big deal for four new Black Hawk helicopters. This will help protect the country from wildfires. The Ministry of Defence made this important purchase. It will make the island better at fighting fires from the air. This is very important for nature and people during hot summers.

The agreement is with a company from Slovakia called HELI COMPANY. They are preparing for the 2026 wildfire season. The helicopters will be leased from April 1st to October 31st, 2026. There is also an option to extend the lease for 30 more days. This gives them more time if fires continue. The Ministry of Defence wants to improve how Cyprus handles emergencies.

Panagiotis Symeou from Defence and Dzurus Josef from HELI COMPANY signed the contract. These helicopters will greatly improve firefighting. They can carry water and other materials to hard-to-reach places. This will help stop fires from getting bigger. This is a big worry for the island.

Climate change is making wildfires worse. Cyprus has many forests and dry plants. It is very sensitive to these changes. The government knows it must invest in better equipment. This is key to reducing the bad effects of wildfires. Fires can harm nature, homes, and lives.

Getting these Black Hawk helicopters is a modern step. It shows a strong plan for safety and emergencies. The Ministry of Defence is working hard to update its firefighting tools. This policy will help the island deal with future threats. These helicopters will be a main part of Cyprus's disaster plan.
