UK Cuts Aid, Focuses on Conflict Zones

The United Kingdom plans to reduce its foreign aid budget. African countries will be most affected by these changes. The government is focusing more on security. This means less money for long-term development programs.

The Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said these are difficult choices. They are not based on ideology. MPs voted last year to cut overseas aid by 40%. This means over £6 billion will be cut. By 2028-29, aid to African countries will fall by 56%. This is a big loss of about £900 million. Essential programs like schools and healthcare could be impacted.

Aid to most G20 countries will also be reduced. Turkey will be the only exception. The money for urgent crises has also been cut. This raises concerns about the UK's ability to help in emergencies. The government wants to send most aid to countries with conflict. About 70% will go to unstable regions by 2029. Countries like Palestine, Sudan, and Ukraine will get more aid.

For countries like Mozambique and Pakistan, this is a big change. Their aid will become investment partnerships. Aid groups worry this could hurt people who need direct help. Afghanistan, Somalia, and Yemen will still get UK help. However, this will be through larger international groups.

The UK wants to spend more on defence. This is because the world feels more dangerous. Some people question if this plan will work. Critics worry that defence spending increases may be slow. Other costs could appear later. This could affect the budget savings. The UK's global reputation may also be damaged.
