Gas Release Injures Two Workers at Power Station

An important maintenance job at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) power station in Vasiliko went wrong on Thursday afternoon. Workers were changing fire safety gas cylinders. Suddenly, inert gas escaped from one of the cylinders. This gas is used to stop fires.

The accident happened around 1:15 PM. Two workers were injured. They were taken quickly to Limassol General Hospital. The workers were from a private company. They were doing important work to replace old fire safety cylinders. The gas came out unexpectedly and with force.

One injured man is 41 years old. He cut his head badly. The other man is 42 years old. His injuries were not as serious. Emergency teams arrived fast. The Larnaca fire service sent a special vehicle and a rescue team. They helped the injured men quickly.

The gas problem happened only in one small area. The power station itself was not damaged. This means the accident only affected the workers. The 41-year-old man stayed in the hospital to be safe because of his head injury. The 42-year-old man was treated and then left the hospital.

Police and the Department of Labour Inspection are now investigating. They want to find out why the gas escaped. They will check the company's work and the equipment used. They want to understand what caused the gas to come out so strongly.

The EAC will help the investigators. This event shows there can be risks during maintenance. However, the quick help from emergency services is good. The investigation will help find out if rules were broken. It will also help make sure this does not happen again. Safety is very important at the power station.
