Cyprus Asks EU for Defence Help

Cyprus wants the European Union to use a special defence rule. This rule is called Article 42/7. It means if one EU country is attacked, others must help. This rule has never been used before. Cyprus's President, Nikos Christodoulides, will talk about this at a big EU meeting.

He will say that fighting in nearby areas is dangerous for Cyprus. He will mention a recent drone attack on a British airbase in Cyprus. President Christodoulides thinks these problems are a real threat to his country. However, some EU officials have different ideas about how serious the danger is.

Cyprus believes that problems in the region affect all EU countries. President Christodoulides disagrees with some EU leaders. He does not think it is right to say these fights are "not Europe's war." This makes Cyprus unhappy. It shows they do not agree on how important European security is for everyone.

Cyprus usually feels safe because of defence deals with Greece, France, and Italy. But the situation is changing. Now, Cyprus thinks they might need the EU's help. They want to use Article 42/7.

The main idea for Cyprus is simple. If one EU country is threatened, all EU countries are threatened. President Christodoulides will explain this at the meeting. He wants other countries to support using the defence rule.

EU officials in Brussels are working hard to get this decision. The drone attack on the airbase shows the danger Cyprus is facing. It is a clear example.

Using Article 42/7 would be a big step for the EU. It would show they are serious about helping each other. This rule could make European security stronger. It would mean the EU can act together when there are big problems.

Leaders like António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen have reacted well. This is good news for Cyprus. It means they might agree to help protect countries facing danger. Cyprus is asking for more than just protection. They want the EU to have a stronger, united plan for security. The results of this meeting will be important for the EU's future defence.
