Rumours about stopping financial grants for blind people in Cyprus were not true. The Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare said this week that payments will continue. This was needed because some misleading information caused worry.
The monthly grant is €382. It helps many people. Around 1,995 people get this grant. The government spends about €9.3 million each year. New applications are still being processed. Since September, 88 new people have been approved. 120 more applications are being checked.
This news is good because of a new law coming in 2026. This law is about social participation for people with disabilities. It will make support stronger. The law already includes blind people and their grants. This will create a better legal base for help.
The new law might also allow for more money in the grant. The Council of Ministers can increase the grant after the law is passed. This could help recipients financially. The law also plans to improve help with personal care and home services. This will support independent living.
The proposed law will protect current rights. People will still get benefits like cheaper electricity. The Pan-Cyprian Organisation of the Blind is happy with the clarification. They will watch the new law closely. The government wants to reduce worry and show its support.
